Suzanne Grace’s niece grows up close to VALentine Complex and dreams of superhero work. Despite her aunt’s objections, Azusa demonstrates her ability to fly at her interview. The Z recalls both Zeitzler and her family’s zodiac connections. Lance Corporeal helps train her for combat.

Azusa combines physical courage with a sharp tongue. She punctures Matchman’s long speeches and notices his weaknesses before he does. Their exchange in “Origin and Tonic” shows the warmth behind the jokes. Jealousy of Discordia adds a personal complication, but Azusa’s responsibilities extend well beyond her feelings for Scott.

Her adventures include captivity at Discordia’s hands, international missions and the Ultima Thule operation. In comic 17 she starts an independent life in Park Slope and offers Kimoko a place to stay. When the Antisemit captures them, her release allows her to take part in defeating him. In the animated teleplay “Aileen Alien,” she even returns Discordia’s apple for the common rescue, resisting the object’s dangerous attraction.
