Rhoda directs VALCom’s scientific work and helps educate Scott. The original character notes describe a Nobel laureate specialising in biogenetics and neurophysiology. Her teaching complements the physical training provided by Lance Corporeal.

“Difference in Autumn” meets Rhoda in Paris before the organisation exists. She speaks to Lance about social awkwardness and her doubts about love. Prize money, patents and inherited property give her the means to propose an organisation devoted to resisting the destruction of human connections. She wants to believe in love and to do something real with her life.

Rhoda raises her niece Clementine and encourages the scientifically gifted Corbin. In “Switchback,” she and Lance work out why the children’s habits have suddenly changed. In the comics, her research into the golden apple leads to an attack and a coma. Her absence wounds the team; her eventual awakening offers hope of finding a way to restore Scott’s powers.
